Andrew Bain was an English economist and educator. He was Professor of Economics at Cambridge University.

Andrew Bain was born on March 21, 1936. He is the son of Hugh and Kathleen (Eadie) Bain.

Andrew received Ph.D. from Christ’s College, Cambridge, in 1963.

While studing at Christ’s College, Andrew Bain served as junior research officer in applied economics at Cambridge University, England. In 1960 he came to Yale University, New Haven, Connecticut, to take post of Cowles Foundation instructor. But in 1961 Bain returned to Cambridge University, where he served for five years as lecturer and then as professor of economics untill 1970. In the latter year he was transfered to the University of Stirling, Scotland, where he held the position of Professor of Economics, Finance and Investment until 1977. Afterwards Bain successively served at the University of Strathclyde, Glasgow, Scotland, as Walton Professor of Monetary and Financial Economics untill 1984; at Midland Bank as group economic adviser untill 1990; and at the University of Glasgow as visiting professor of political economy.

Andrew was a member of the Committee to Review the Functioning of Financial Institutions, 1977 - 1980; Monopolies and Mergers Commission, 1981 - 1982; a member of board of directors of Scottish Enterprise. During his life he also contributed to economic and finance journals.

During his life Andrew Bain wrote six books, most famous of which include The Growth of Television Ownership in the United Kingdom since the War (1964) and Company Financing in the United Kingdom: A Flow of Funds Model (1975).
